NZ Art Guild Member - Catherine Roberts

New Artist Residency on Wellington’s South Coast

The New Zealand Affordable Art Trust has launched a new Artist in Residence programme in Lyall Bay, Wellington, in the historic building formerly occupied by Plunket NZ.

NZ Art Guild Member from Wellington, Catherine Roberts is the first artist to take up residency, where she will paint, exhibit and sell her art up until March 2011.

Located immediately on the waterfront the newly opened Maranui Gallery is flanked by Wellington’s iconic Maranui Surf Life Saving Club and Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club buildings. The premises were previously occupied by the Maranui Surf Life Saving Club while they awaited the reconstruction of their building after it was devastated by fire in August 2009.

The residency is just one of a string of initiatives devised by the NZ Affordable Art Trust to assist emerging artists. Other projects to their credit include the New Zealand Art Show, $15,000 NZAAT Artist Grant, $5,000 Signature Piece Art Award, Winesale.co.nz wine label commission and the ASB Children’s Art Competition.

For Catherine this opportunity comes at a crucial stage of her artistic development. The Miramar based artist has been painting part-time for 17 years but never had the confidence to pursue art as a viable full-time occupation.

However, two successful years showing with the NZ Art Show (formerly the NZ Affordable Art Show) gave her a much-needed boost of confidence, compelling her to follow her passion seriously.

He Panui — 2nd call for expressions of interest

NAU MAI HAERE MAI

He Panui — 2nd call for expressions of interest

HOW DIVERSITY WORKS
AN ART EVENT TO DEVELOP IN-DEPTH DIALOGUE ABOUT DIVERSITY

PURPOSE — To reflect both internal and external processes that promote or restrict human diversity including personal, psychological, social, cultural and political factors.

AIM — To develop a more in-depth dialogue about diversity; to explore the idea that diversity exists in all people, in all places, at all times; to challenge humanity to recognise diversity and respond creatively.
Expressions should reflect the artist’s understanding of concepts of uniqueness, difference and abnormality in contrast to commonness, similarity and normality. Artists are invited to use diverse mediums (eg. painting, drawing, photography, moving image, multimedia, sculpture, installation, written/spoken word, performance), with the intent that the exhibition space will reflect the diversity theme.

Expressions of interest close 31 January 2011.

Works will be selected for online or gallery exhibition at ArtStation, Auckland from 16 August to 3 September 2011.
For more information and to submit an expression of interest,

A GARDEN FULL OF POETRY

Some of Auckland’s hottest, up-and-coming and established poets will be performing as part of Kumeu Art in the Garden Festival this weekend.

The poetry bouquet ranges from lyrical to improvisation, performance poetry with music, to post modernist word play. Each poet will also bring their favourite poem about art and gardens by another poet for an outing at Waimauku’s lovely Dharamkot garden.

Spoken word ensemble Printable Reality and guests present a rich and varied line-up for lovers of literature, art and gardens, Saturday and Sunday between 12 PM and 2pm.

“You don’t have to be ‘literary’ to enjoy poetry,” says Gus Simonovic from Printable Reality. “Love of language is a basic human pleasure, and poetry, art and a garden, that’s an irresistible combination.

“There is an active poetry community in Auckland and this will be an amazing opportunity to be entertained by some of Auckland’s most original voices. It’s great to be able to take poetry into a new setting and to a new audience.” Printable Reality produces multimedia performances that have strong poetry/spoken word elements enhanced by combinations of music, dance and visuals.

Art in the garden poets include Siobhan Harvey, poetry editor of Takahe magazine and a consulting editor of the International Literary Quarterly; Auckland performance poet Gus Simonovic; Literatti performers Christian Jensen, Miriam Barr and Daniel Larsen; Kirsten Warner and Jerry Beale from Printable Reality; Poetry Live MCs Penny Somervaille, Kiri Piahana-Wong and Ila Selwyn; Metonymy organiser Rosetta Allan; poetry slam champion Michael Rudd.

Kumeu Art in the Garden festival of creativity showcases the arts in some of the West’s finest settings.

At Dharamkot, 90 Waikoukou Valley Road, Waimauku.

• Saturday: 12 PM Kirsten Warner; 12.15 PM David Taylor; 12.30 PM Miriam Barr; 12.45 PM Siobhan Harvey; 1 PM Daniel Larsen; 1.15 PM Ila Selwyn; 1.30 Christian Jensen; 1.45 PM Michael Botur.
• 12 PM Gus Simonovic; 12.15 PM Penny Sommervaile; 12.30 PM Jeremy Roberts; 12.45 PM Kelly Malone; 1 PM Jerry Beale; 1.15 PM Kiri Piahana-Wong; 1.30 Michael Rudd; 1.45 PM Rosetta Allan.

POEMS – 4 short poems attached (below).

Night swimming
I saw lights in the water
while I was swimming in the sea
one night.

They stuck onto my arms and legs.
Light streamed from the ends of my fingers and toes.
I flicked my feet like a fish
I drew circles with my hands
I shimmered like a star falling
in the deep dark water.

Kiri Piahana-Wong

Leaving Diamond Harbour
We emptied the garage in half a day
finding memories like gathering mushrooms.

The old wooden pegs you hung
our outer lives by, privately,
on the retractable line.

We made puppets or dolls out of them
with fine long legs and crew cuts.

The signal house from the train set,
empty and the signalman
just a stern paper peeling from the upstairs window
all his signals
empty too.

Each object a struck match:
something old flared and gone dark.

David Taylor

It’s a girl
At first she just slept
grey and sweetly furred
with John Lee Hooker eyes
and finger pads.
I knew I could love a kitten
and was reassured,
even grew to like
hooks of mother of pearl
and teeth to nipple.

By the third month
sharp, hard words
replaced purr and mew.
How advanced, the other mothers said
thinking, what a cat of a kid
what tom fathered her?

Kirsten Warner

Equator
If the words are the stars
Poems are constellations.
You need to know the figure
To shape out meanings.
And wherever you move
every nightsky speaks
a different language.

I crossed the line -
and left my northern stars
at that invisible border.
They were confiscated by
equatorial customs office.
But I smuggled my poems with me
so I can still speak to you.

I exchanged my Little Dipper
for Magellanic clouds.
Instead of Polaris
Sigma Octanis brightens my horizon

And I reach up high and I dig down deep
as every plant that has been
pulled out by its roots.
Lucky to have Leo and Orion
To help me bear my Southern Cross.

Gus Simonovic

Invitation "Nelson to Darfield" Selwyn Gallery

*Bather, Oilstick on Board, Lloyd Harwood

Sat 5th Nov – Thurs 2nd Dec ‘Nelson To Darfield’

An exceptional exhibition from five renowned Nelson Artists: Marilyn Andrews, Owen Bartlett, Katie Gold, Lloyd Harwood and Sally Papps who explore colour, texture and the visual juxtaposition of art and our environment.

Selwyn Gallery is very pleased to present an eclectic collection of highly regarded artists from Nelson - five very disparate styles and mediums which complement each other through wit, form, technique and execution.

Marilyn Andrews is well known for painting, but has recently explored more textural elements in her art. Fabulous miniature cloth ‘costumes’ are hung three together on string, with intricate detailing and design. By showing souls ‘strung up in limbo’, Marilyn questions societal constructs and ‘the journey of the soul’ as we explore who we are, and what drives us to exist within certain parameters – be it relationships, work, or family expectations.

Owen Bartlett is a fantastically talented sculptor with a sense of the dramatic. Influenced by his love of the sea and particularly diving, Owen has created ‘Neptune’s Treasure’ – a series of simplistic, biomorphic oceanic forms made from Aerated Clay. With exquisite texture and proportion, the ‘Neptune’s Treasure’ series conveys the magic and mystery deep within the sea, while showing the unequivocal beauty inherent within its depths.

Katie Gold is a contemporary ceramic artist who’s exuberant joy in colour, texture and shape is captivating. Using fine strips of clay, Katie ‘builds’ layers of clay into unique forms which celebrate her love of New Zealand in the physical – natural beauty and incredible geography – combined with the vibrant use of colour in her glazes, resulting in an outstanding ceramic collection.

Lloyd Harwood is a wonderfully sophisticated painter, who creates intriguing works rich in subtext and humour. Simplified forms and excellent composition create structural planes from which an intense use of colour draws the eye. ‘Satire and paradox’ inform much of Lloyd’s work – often challenging the viewer, but mostly reveals “…a personal celebration of both the child-like wonder and often adult folly of being human.”

Sally Papps is also a highly sophisticated artist indulging in the use of humour and satire to convey her feelings about small-town New Zealand. The facets of rural life we both love and hate are gently but firmly made fun of in her cleverly executed works. Luminous colour, strong composition and a great deal of humour make these works intelligent and charming.

Please note, there will NOT be an Opening for this exhibition, but it will run from 10am Sat 5th November until Thurs 2nd December.
Selwyn Gallery will be open Tuesday through to Sunday from 10am-4pm for the entirety of the exhibition. A gold coin donation is welcomed. An exhibition programme is available on the gallery’s website www.selwyngallery.co.nz or in the gallery itself.

NZ Art Guild's October Feature Artist - Angela Laby

Contemporary artist, Angela Laby, is enjoying a flourishing career as a full time, multi award winning professional artist.

Angela specialises in contemporary ‘pure’ abstract art, with the use of acrylics on canvas. Her unique use of texture is incorporated into every piece as she believes that this gives her work an added dimension, and for those who appreciate her work, something additional to contemplate.

‘I work with a variety of textures and mediums, and find that they work extremely well with my style of ‘pure’ abstract art. I find an infinite variety of textured patterning’s and designs, and consequently, it is fair to say that no two of my paintings are the same – each is uniquely individual’.

Angela exhibits extensively, with The Original Art Sale, The NZ Art Show, The Franklin Art Exhibition, Royal Easter Show Art Awards, and The Great Summer Art Exhibition, being several of the more recent, and has received several awards and commendations as a result. Recently, Angela exhibited at the Legato exhibition in Cassino, Italy.

A proud and active member of the NZ Art Guild, Angela regularly participates in member’s exhibitions and events and credits her involvement in the NZ Art Guild as being a launching platform from which she has established herself as a recognised contemporary artist.

‘The supportive environment and great leadership at the Guild has allowed me to develop as an artist, and the marketing and promotion ideas have proved invaluable’.
