Secret Artwork Raises Cash for Mental Health

MEDIA RELEASE

June 18, 2008

Secret Artwork Raises Cash for Mental Health Foundation

Artists from the NZ Art Guild have created an artwork that will be kept secret until it's auctioned on July 2nd. They have once again joined forces to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) through a charity auction which coincides with the Art Guild's 5th birthday.

The extraordinary collaborative project titled “Ngatahi” will be auctioned, along with other pieces of art kindly donated by top Kiwi artists. Ngatahi is a unique artwork, which consists of 64 individual artworks by 61 artists from all over NZ. The theme of the artwork is Together – our land, our people, our culture.

When all of the individual artworks are combined they will create an overall image and the artwork measures 1.3m x 1.3m. The complete image of the collaborative artwork is kept secret, even from those participating in it, until the unveiling of the artwork just prior to the opening night of the NZ Art Guild annual exhibition "Out of the Blue", which runs for the month of July.

All of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to MHF to further develop its resource and information service. The service is free to anyone who would like information on mental health, including consumers of mental health services, mental health professionals and the wider public.

“We’re delighted to be joining with the New Zealand Art Guild on such a unique and exciting project,” says Judi Clements, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation. “Our resource and information service aims to enhance and ensure mental health for all New Zealanders by providing a wide range of accessible information, and enabling understanding and support. The service is particularly important at the current time as demands are increasing, which we believe is due to the recession and its effect on people’s lives.”

You can help support people with experience of a mental illness, and their friends and families, by coming to the opening night and bidding on the artwork on July 2nd at the Bruce Mason Centre, Takapuna Beach, Auckland.

This is the second year that the New Zealand Art Guild has raised money for MHF through a charity auction. Last year proceeds went to Out of the Blue, MHF’s depression awareness campaign.

Feature Artist of the Week...

JOANNE REDSHAW

The pendulum of my life has always swung back to art, so when I had a major change in my life in 2005 I decided it was time to pick up my brushes in earnest. I am now studying with The Learning Connexion.

There is too much pain and misery in the world, so to counteract this I try to keep a positive attitude and see the beauty in my surroundings. I want to paint pictures, which will bring colour and life to blank walls; I want people to take pleasure in what they see. With music, we stir the soul; art should evoke a similar, but visual pleasure.

Coming from a family of Auckland sailors, the dormant volcano Rangitoto has been a dominant feature of my life. With this series of paintings, I have been experimenting with contrasting textures and movement. I have tried to recreate the feeling of being there, out on the water.
I hope you enjoy this work.

Emerging Illustrator Award

Aspiring illustrators now have the chance to kick-start their career and see their own work published with mentoring from a top picture book artist, following the establishment of the inaugural Storylines Gavin Bishop Award for Picture Book Illustration.

This new award, sponsored by Random House New Zealand and the Storylines Children’s Literature Charitable Trust, aims to encourage the publication of new and exciting high-quality picture books from New Zealand illustrators. It also recognises the contribution Gavin Bishop has made to the writing and illustrating of children’s picture books and gives an emerging talent the opportunity to benefit from his expertise.

In addition to a $1,500 monetary prize, the winner of the award will receive mentoring and support from celebrated children’s author and illustrator, Gavin Bishop, and may also receive an offer of publication by Random House New Zealand.

The award could give a new – but not necessarily young – unpublished illustrator a great start in a career as a picture book artist," says Gavin Bishop.

"There are many talented artists out there who may not have thought of delving into the medium of the picture book, but we hope that this award will give them the impetus to do so and enable us to uncover some great new talent," he says.

"A picture book is not just a short story with pictures. In a good picture book the story and imagery work together, each complementing the other – they should be inseparable."

Each entrant will be required to submit a storyboard, a page of rough drawings and two pieces of finished art to fit with text provided by Random House.

"Besides freshness of ideas, good drawing and confident use of materials and techniques, the judges will be looking for strong characterisation, strong pictorial story-telling, and artwork that is appropriate to the designated age group," says Random House New Zealand Deputy Publishing Director, Jenny Hellen.

The winner of the award will go on to work with Gavin Bishop on a picture book which then would be considered for publication by Random House upon its completion. Entries must be received by 31 October 2009, with the presentation of the award made at the Storylines Margaret Mahy Day in March 2010.

For further information on the Storylines Gavin Bishop Award for Picture Book Illustration, including details on how to enter, visit www.storylines.org.nz

Gavin Bishop is a renowned children's book author and illustrator who has published some 30 books that have been translated into eight languages. His books The House That Jack Built, Weaving Earth and Sky and Snake and Lizard have all won the Book of the Year Award at the New Zealand Post Children's Book Awards. He has won the Russell Clark Medal for Illustration with Mrs McGinty and the Bizarre Plant, Rats! and Kiwi Moon. In 2000 he was awarded the Margaret Mahy Medal for his contribution to New Zealand children’s literature.

Feature Artist of the Week...

ANGUS WATSON

New Zealand painter Angus Watson is passionate about colour. His ways of seeing changed utterly when he went to Fiji in the early 1990's. Surrounded by bright, extraordinary colours and works by the Australian artist Ken Done, who is renowned as a colourist, it was a turning point in his art. It changed the way Watson worked. He began painting people with eyes the colours of pumpkins, aubergines or poppies with hair of greens or vermilions, with limbs of lime. He began to break all the rules.

Using his preferred medium-watercolour-and concentrating on the figure, Watson explores the joy of playing with colours, of putting one colour beside another and allowing them to bounce off and bleed into each other. The effects are instant. There are effects that are unexpected , that haven't been thought of. Although he focuses on figure painting, for Watson the subject is not important-it is something on which to hang the colours.

Angus Watson has been a full time painter since 1988. He sells most of his work from his Littles Road Studio near Queenstown in the heart of the South Island of New Zealand. His work is regularly exhibited throughout the country. Half of his work has sold to overseas customers in more than twenty countries.

Beautiful 2010 calendars of Angus's work are now available

Feature Artist of the Week

MICHELE COURAGE

North Shore artist, Michele Courage, delights us with large, sweeping, modernistic canvases. Her work hangs in private collections throughout the world, in London, Cape Town, New York, Ireland, San Paulo and Canada. Her earliest inspiration was her parents, both artists in their own right. Later inspiration was found in the life of Jackson Pollock (1912-1956). An Abstract Expressionist artist, he felt that "the modern artist is working with space and time, expressing his or her feelings rather than illustrating". Michele’s bold, expressive brushstrokes convey this modernistic sentiment.

Says Michele: "The thought process, feeling or inspirational idea for a painting can take me days or weeks to formulate. Each painting I do is filled with life and movement, capturing the idea and the energy I feel. This is what I want to portray." These ideas and emotions extend beyond the borders of her canvasses. The viewer is invited, through a two-dimensional picture plane, into a world of three-dimensional sensation.

Michele’s paintings, within the undefined borders of the abstract world and sweeping lines created by paint in motion, render a visual expression of time, space and energy. An Auckland resident, Michele’s roots are in Africa. With a modernistic and individual twist, her work shows the influences of both the traditional African and Maori art – something she is passionate about.
