NZ Society North Shore Plover Charity Art Auction

As previously mentioned several of our artists are involved in a charity art exhibition/auction in London. This exhibition and auction which will be held by the New Zealand Society in association with the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC). The Appeal this year will raise funds for the New Zealand Shore Plover, and will be use to continue the five year reintroduction programme on Mana Island and to upgrade the captive breeding aviaries at Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre.

The New Zealand shore plover “Thinornis novaeseelandiae” is one of the rarest plover species in the world. It is a Nationally Critical ranked species (the highest possible threat status) and is a small, colourful shorebird that was once widespread in the coastal areas of New Zealand, but by the late 1800s had become confined to a small population on the Chatham Islands. The current world population, including birds in captivity, is estimated at less than 250.

Suze in Mayfair, London has agreed to exhibit all the donated works of art in it’s gallery from Monday 1 September until Thursday 9 October. Then on Friday 10 October the pieces will be sold at an auction and gourmet food evening to be held in the Penthouse in New Zealand House.

This is from my journey of life series. It is about the delicate balance of life which is effected by whatever path we take. We need to make sure that the path we take keeps the balance and doesn't destroy it.

The title of the painting is " Forget-me-not". The name is based on a plant in the Chatham Island which is featured at the bottom of the painting. It also signifies that we should "forget not" the bird life that inhabits our country. In the painting there are the two shore plovers, two Tui's, two Kiwis and two NZ horses, draping down is the Kowhai tree.

Artist: Chavah Kinloch
Title: Clouded Hope

Artist: Tania Verrent
Title: High-Tide Rest
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Size: 102cm x 76cm

When I first started researching the N.Z Shore Plover for this painting I was amazed at how small these birds are at only 20cm.This rocky westcoast shoreline is situated near "Mana Island" which is part of the coastal shoreline of the Greater Wellington Region.I happen to live only an hours drive from this area & on the day I visited, the White-fronted Terns in the background of my painting were some of the many birds there on the day.I chose to paint a small group of N.Z Shore Plovers at rest waiting for low-tide.
