Wild Things in focus
Janet Andrews started out as geologist who drew in her spare time and has ended up an artist who dabbles in geology.
The Eastbourne painter is exhibiting a series of natural history artworks at Wellington’s St James gallery from May 6-16. She will donate half the sale price of each painting to Forest & Bird.
Each artwork features a wilderness landscape in vibrant watercolours and a line drawing of a creature found in the landscape. There’s a touch of whimsy to many works, such as the beak-to-bottom chain of oystercatchers above a rocky shore.
All creatures great and small have caught Andrews’ imagination. There’s a giant land snail with a beech forest, a dragonfly from a wetland and a kea with a braided river. Sometimes Andrews puts the flora rather than the fauna into sharp focus, for instance a Marlborough rock daisy from a rugged coastline.
“The series has been fun to do,” Andrews says. But there’s a serious conservation message, too. “It’s great to show what needs to be protected in each landscape.”
The Wild Things exhibition will be launched with a gala opening at 6pm on May 6 and the Guest speaker is Grant Tilly.
If you are in Wellington, come along to see some great artwork and help us raise funds for Forest & Bird services. Bring your friends and family as well.
