The Molly Morpeth Canaday 3D Award
(Application deadline: Friday July 17, 2009)
The Molly Morpeth Canaday 3D Award has been established as an annual event to encourage and recognise the quality of creativity found in the area of three-dimensional applied arts. This year we aim to promote excellence in glass design and craftsmanship. Previous years have focussed on works by those in the ceramics and jewellery communities and in years to come other media may be chosen, but always with a three-dimensional focus.
These Awards have been made possible through a trust fund established by Frank Canaday in memory of his wife, Molly Morpeth Canaday. The trust has been a major supporter of the Arts in Whakatane and the Whakatane District Museum & Gallery would like to offer their thanks for the Trusts continuing support of these awards.
There is a maximum of 2 entries per artist at $25 per entry.Works chosen for the exhibition will be selected from entries received. Winners will be determined by a sole judge, and the awards will be presented at the opening of the exhibition on Friday 21 August 2009, 6pm.

McCahon House Trust Residencies Call for Applications
(Application deadline: Not Specified)
Ten years ago the McCahon House Trust in association with architect Graeme Burgess started to realise a dream to restore the little kauri-clad cottage in Titirangi where New Zealand's foremost contemporary painter Colin McCahon and his family lived during the 1950s.
These ten years of effort has now been recognised with the restored McCahon House this month winning a national New Zealand Institute of Architects Award for heritage.
The dream has now grown to include not only the sensitive restoration of the bach and its surrounding garden but also the building of a Pete Bossley designed apartment and studio next door. These are both now NZIA national award winning projects.
Since its launch in December 2006, an alumni of eight artists have now had the chance to live and work in the natural and historic environment that surrounds the McCahon House. (Artists have been Judy Millar, Andrew McLeod, James Robinson, Gavin Hipkins, Rohan Wealleans, Richard Lewer, Luise Fong and currently Eve Armstrong. Residents for the remainder of the year are Lisa Reihana and Ava Seymour)
The Trust is now calling for applications from professional artists for residencies between March 2010 and March 2011. Applications are available on the website, www.mccahonhouse.org.nz
The little cottage at 67 Otitori Bay Road Titirangi where New Zealand's greatest contemporary painter lived and worked in the 1950s has now been visited by over 4,700 people since it opened two and a half years ago and is open on Wednesdays and the weekend between 10 and 2pm. Eve's residency exhibition will be held next door and will be open from 10am to 4pm from 31 May until 5 June.

Arteries of Aotearoa: A call for young New Zealand artists
(Application deadline: June 3, 2009)
Intersect, a nationwide network of Young Leaders in Sustainability, is calling for young New Zealand artists (aged 18-25) to create an artwork that explores ideas around water and cultural diversity. One talented artist will be awarded $2000.
'Waiora: Arteries of Aotearoa' explores how cultural diversity challenges and unifies our society and what this means for sustaining our most precious natural resource: healthy water. Young artists are invited to submit a proposal for an artwork that is an interpretation of 'Waiora'. The successful proposal will be given $1000 for material costs, and a cash prize of $1000. The artwork will be exhibited in Wellington in July 2009.
Many of New Zealand's art works themed around cultural diversity focus on cultural divides; and the past and future difficulties that the Treaty of Waitangi presents. However we also live in a country where cultural diversity is increasingly celebrated among many young people. Intersect wants this art work to capture how young artists in the early 21st Century view the importance of cultural diversity in working towards a sustainable future for NZ's freshwater resources. We also want to give young people a stronger voice.
Proposals are due by 3 June 2009. Details are available at www.intersect.org.nz/waiora/
The Proposals will be assessed by a panel comprising Megan Tamati-Quenelle - Toi Maori Curator, Te Papa; Wayne Youle - Artist, Ngapuhi, Ngati Whakaeke, Ngati Pakeha; Sophie Jerram - Artist, Filmmaker, Writer and Sustainability commentator; James Blackie - Director at Page Blackie Gallery; Megan Hosking - Sustainability Trust; Sarah Campbell - Intersect Trustee; and Hayden Montgomerie - New Zealand National Commission for UNSECO: United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation)
'Waiora: Arteries of Aotearoa' has been made possible by the New Zealand Commission for UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) and Intersect. Any queries about this Project may be directed to Megan Hosking on 021 458 845; or emailed to youngnzartist@gmail.com.

Sculptors wanted for Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens
(Application deadline: 1st July 2009)
Artists throughout New Zealand are invited to submit proposals for exhibiting at the Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens new exhibition opening in November 2009.
Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens is a tranquil, peaceful oasis set in gardens on a rural property looking out to the Kaipara Harbour. It features selected contemporary sculptures, created by established and emerging New Zealand artists.
The sculpture gardens have been developed in conjunction with Kaipara Coast Plant Centre which has been owned and operated by David Bayly from this site since 1988. The site was developed so that visitors to the gardens can stroll along the sculpture trail and find inspiration for selecting sculptures and plants to enhance their gardens and property while enjoying great views of the rural setting.
The sculpture gardens are only a 35 minute drive from Auckland on the scenic SH 16 route, making it readily accessible to a large public and to potential clients.
You are invited to submit a proposal for a new or existing work(s), to be exhibited on a sale or return basis for a period of approximately 6 months unless sold prior.
New sculptural works are sought that make the most of the rural landscape with a mix of grassy slopes, ponds, wetland area, formal gardens, native plantings, an orchard, pine planting and views to the Kaipara Harbour.
Sculptures in a range of sizes, mediums and price ranges, including static, kinetic, utilising light, sound or water, ephemeral or conceptual in nature that reflect contemporary sculptural practice will all be considered.
Artists need to take into account that work must be sufficiently strong and of weather resistant materials to remain installed at the site for six months and to have longevity for the purchaser.
This project is seeking sculptures for installation between 17th and 22nd of October 2009 with the opening of the exhibition to the public in November, so please return your proposals by Wednesday 1st July. You are welcome to submit more than one proposal.
Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens will advise you of your acceptance or not by 15th July so you have plenty of time to create your pieces.
This is a great opportunity for your work to be displayed in a setting that will create excellent exposure for you and will be conducive to generating sales of your sculptures
Dates to Remember
*Proposals received by Wednesday 1st July.
*Notification of acceptance by Wednesday 15th July.
*Installation by artists between Saturday 17th and Wednesday 22nd of October.
*Exhibition opening November 2009. Date to be confirmed.

Call for submissions - Matariki exhibition
(Application deadline: Not Specified)
Te Mārama o Matariki – The Light of MatarikiA
Matariki exhibition for 2009 conceived by the Corban Estate Arts Centre
Matariki is the Māori name for the small cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters, in the Taurus constellation. In New Zealand it comes into view low on the north-eastern horizon, appearing in the tail of the Milky Way in the last days of May or in early June, just before dawn. This heralds the Māori New Year and the beginning of the Matariki celebrations.
This year, the Auckland regions are celebrating Matariki from the end of June to the end of July and the Corban Estate Arts Centre is creating a range of festival events, classes and an exhibition, Te Mārama o Matariki – The Light of MatarikiCEAC would like Maori artists to submit ideas for works that centre around light, keeping in mind the main themes of Matariki – star clusters and the night sky, heralding the New Year, rebirth and growth, harvest and celebration and the cycles of life and death.
The medium is broad – CEAC would like predominantly sculptural work of all types and materials as well as some of a more ephemeral nature that can be shown outside on the night of the opening (a large event to launch the entire festival), but would also like to have installations, paintings, textiles etc to complement the main sculptural works.
Please contact Lisa Rogers by email in the first instance and include a bit about yourself as well some images of your past work if possible. CEAC also have a small budget available to assist with materials or production costs for a selected number of works. CEAC hope to also team a few artists up with local manufacturers if the chance eventuates. CEAC are very open to ideas and welcome the chance to discuss your work.
