NZ Art Guild Challenge #6

Every fortnight a challenge is issued to our guild members and also to members of our facebook group.
These challenges are completely voluntary. Submissions must be original and be completed during the 2 week time-frame. Participants may choose to interpret the theme in any way they wish.

The theme for Challenge 6 was MEMORY and the challenge component was to use a limited colour palette of 2 colours plus black and white.

Featured artist of the week - Ambury Hall

AMBURY HALL


Ambury Hall is a New Zealand artist who has recently moved from Auckland from Taranaki.

Ambury has recently prepared an exhibition to raise money for the Dyslexia Foundation. The Dyslexia Foundation is a charity deal to Ambury's heart when he found out that his son has the condition.

When Ambury's son, William, was at school he found it hard to read, but it was not until he went to university that he found out he had dyslexia. William has now completed his degree and helps people with the same condition. When Ambury found out about his son's dyslexia he felt that he had failed him. As a retired teacher, Ambury had devoted his life to teaching people with learning difficulties.

Ambury's exhibition will feature a painting named Confusion which represents his view of dyslexia. For more information about dyslexia email info@dyslexia.org.nz.

Feature Artist of the Week - RifRaf


RIFRAF


RifRaf born 1965 in Hamilton, New Zealand is an figurative artist and painter based in New Zealand. Known for monumental images of large women.

Life

During the early 1990s RifRaf reached a crisis point in life with a long period of obesity followed by a cycle of anorexia.Breaking free from this self destructive behaviour RifRaf produces art which glorifies the large woman.

Art

RifRaf's work celebrates the beauty and strength that is Woman Proof that she doesn't have to be a perfect size 6 to feel and be strong, self-confident, and desirable.Happy in her voluptuousness and not afraid to flaunt it."This is ALL me and I love it !”

Career

A self-taught artist. RifRaf cites primary influences as prehistoric venus figurines, and central American folk art.RifRaf has drawn regularly since childhood. And still always carries a sketch book, drawing, for example, customers in cafés.

During the late 1990s RifRaf teamed with several musical groups, joining them on stage to paint as they played.

In mid-2007 RifRaf suffered a violent home-invasion during which many works in progress and stored completed works were destroyed.

2008 Featured on Air NZ in-flight entertainment 'highlights of New Zealand'.

RifRaf has been a contributing artist in all of the NZ Art Guilds collaborative art projects

RifRaf also contributed works to "Sukkot 5769" exhibition held in Jerusalem, Israel.

This exciting exhibition brings together music and art. Local Musicians Katharine and Peter Watts have hand picked four pieces of inspiring music for artist to visually illustrate.

NZ Art Guild Member makes Yellow Art Award Final

"Reflections" by Teresa Rodger


Teresa Rodger is one of 3 finalists in the Waikato, King Country & Thames Valley Section of the Yellow Art Awards with her work "Reflections". This competition helps determine what will be on the front cover of the White Pages.
