The David Awards 2009


We are very excited to announce that the NZ Art Guild has won the Most Community Minded Business Award in The David Awards 2009. This category is for a business which gives back to its community, e.g. local, regional or industry sector, in ways, shapes or forms which benefit the community significantly.

The David Awards recognise the unsung heroes in small businesses throughout New Zealand, whose tenacity, courage and ingenuity place them firmly at the forefront of entrepreneurship in this country. Just as David, an ordinary, unassuming young man, used shrewdness and a simple slingshot to conquer the giant Goliath, so these entrepreneurial Davids often punch well above their weight. The David Awards seek to honour these heroes in small business.

I am a photographic artist. A faery wing and things creator.

Someone who is probably obsessed with anything Enchanting...

Oh and a real life pixie.

Honest.


I am an odd real life faery, that loves jumping in puddles and dancing in the rain, nature inspires me, and I am forever searching for the faery groves around my beautiful country. I love sparkly wings and things, and purples, husky hues and bluesy tunes. I am often found sleeping in the magickal willow tree......Sometimes though, I am also found wandering through the misty valleys with the twist of the full moon, comfortably caressing the darkened shadows....But all in all, faery, light or dark, I am unique and at one.

My style of art is perhaps quirky, perhaps unique but that describes me, my beliefs are centered on nature and beyond, so it stands to reason my magical creations mirror my inner being. I always played around with a camera, I love to capture that special vision amidst the magic that I feel I have always had. My passion of fantasy and mythology has never waned much from my imagination,I guess it is deeply embedded in me. All my art is original, and I like to go out and converse with nature to get the background shots and ambiance I am needing for my art. I create my own costumes and props as often as possible, making the imagery with my own flavour of quirky. All talent shots are taken by me on location.

Anni Morris

"I've drawn, painted and made things all of my life in one way or another. Detail, colour, texture, shapes, light and shadow…all things visual have always been very important to me. As a child I enjoyed creating something out of nothing…a dolls house from cardboard shoe boxes, a puppet from odds and ends, even wooden stilts from an old broken piano.

I have never wished it to be a restrictive technical exercise but more an explorative process, where I feel freedom to discover things ‘en route’. This way, it retains its sense of fun and playfulness.

I consider myself an experimental painter and a perennial beginner who has no fixed style. Art for me is about limitless possibilities more than anything else. Creating art is a form of magic and it never ceases to surprise or interest me.

I adore cats (seeking to capture their “catness”in an expressionist manner), trees/plants, buildings, skies, faces and ethnic motifs. The common denominator in my work is colour. I prefer a warm palette.

My mother, a commercial artist, was my first teacher. I have studied Design at Otago University and majored in Art at the Dunedin College of Education. Mostly though I am self-taught and self-representing. I live in Dunedin, in the "Deep South" of New Zealand. My art has been collected in New Zealand and abroad" - Anni Morris

Innocent Partner

Earlier in September Anni entered 6 paintings in the MS Society (Multiple Scelerosis Society) Wobbly Arts Exhibition. It opened with a charity art auction and 5 out of the 6 sold on the opening night, one to Peter Chin (the Dunedin Mayor) who also officially opened the auction.

Anni also recently entered two paintings in the Dunedin International Airport Art Awards/Otago Arts Society Spring Exhibition. The painting ‘Innocent Partner’ won 2nd place and sold along with her other painting ‘Sweet Surrender’. Both of these artworks were created for NZ Art Guild Challenges! The exhibition is on at the Dunedin Railway Station at the moment.

NZ Art Guild Challenge #10

Every fortnight a challenge is issued to our guild members and also to members of our facebook group.These challenges are completely voluntary. Submissions must be original and be completed during the 2 week time-frame. Participants may choose to interpret the theme in any way they wish.

NZ Art Guild A Finalist In The David Awards 2009: Heroes In Small Business

The NZ Art Guild is excited about being named as a finalist in The David Awards 2009: Heroes In Small Business. The David Awards recognise the unsung heroes in home and small businesses throughout New Zealand, whose tenacity, courage and ingenuity place them firmly at the forefront of entrepreneurship in this country.

The NZ Art Guild is one of three finalists in the "Most Community Minded Business" category which recognises a business which gives back to its community, e.g. local, regional or industry sector, in ways, shapes or forms which benefit the community significantly.

Guild Manager, Sophia Elise says "We couldn't think of a better category to be a finalist in. We are proud to support not only visual artists but the wider NZ community and charities like Mental Health Foundation and the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation."

The organizer of the Awards, Heather Douglas, says, “The judges felt there was a strong and varied field of entrants this year. These finalists are inspiring, courageous business people with a passion for what they do and the determination to make it work. Some have overcome considerable adversity in order to reach the success they now enjoy.”

Category winners and a Supreme Award will be announced during a live webcast on The David Awards web site from 10.30 a.m. on the 7th of October. A podcast of the event will be available for download for an extended period after the actual ceremony.
